Data guy talking about the Arts?
As outlined above, I want to take action on blank City owned walls across West Windsor. Why?
- Beautifying our neighbourhoods: Research suggests that community art, particularly when paired with broader neighbourhood improvements, can help discourage graffiti, vandalism and other minor incidents while creating more welcoming public spaces.
- Supporting local artists: Give West Windsor artists an opportunity to showcase their talents in their own neighbourhoods, build their portfolios and gain greater exposure.
- Engaging the community: Involve residents in identifying locations, developing themes and providing input on designs. This can build community buy-in, neighbourhood pride and a greater sense of ownership over public spaces.
- Creating opportunities for future investment: The seed funding that local artists and community organizations can access through this idea, could be leveraged into larger public art initiatives in parks, libraries, community centres and other public spaces across West Windsor.
Other “Arts and Culture” items I have eyes on:
- Bring back Neighbourhood Nights and rotate them through different parks giving more West-End artists a chance to perform.
- Explore busker spaces in the Sandwich BIA, Mary Bibb Parkette, Mill St. Park, and Riverfront Trail and near the University of Windsor.
- A painted crosswalk on University Ave at the Mason Education Centre/Gateway Park crossing.
- Look to reduce fees for venue rentals and other associated event costs.
- Partner with AWE to bring Look Out Again Campaign to West Windsor.
- Update the Arts Culture and Heritage Fund (ACHF) guidelines to allow eligible projects/individuals to stack municipal support and in-kind contributions.
Admittedly, these initiatives will not transform Windsor’s arts and cultural sector. However, they represent practical, achievable steps that can make a difference in our neighbourhoods. By removing barriers, creating opportunities for local talent and making better use of our existing public spaces, we can help build a stronger arts and cultural presence in West Windsor.
Arts and culture should not be limited to major festivals, downtown venues or large capital projects. They should also be part of our everyday neighbourhoods — in our parks, along our streets, at our community centres and in the places where residents already gather. Small, targeted investments can help make that happen while strengthening community connections and giving West Windsor artists more opportunities to contribute to the neighbourhoods they call home.
More to come on this in the full platform!
I love the idea of painting walls with art.
Agreed, its a fantastic idea to beautify the neighborhood with local artist talents. Lets bring community together.
