Today was a big day with housing announcement downtown on Pelissier Street downtown with 48 units going into a parking look. I want to congratulate Councillor Agostino and the whole City team that got this over the line! It doesn’t sound like much, but these units aren’t all market rate, rather there are:
- 32 Attainable units
- 8 Accessible units
- 8 Deeply Affordable units
Sure it would be nice to have a bigger building etc. this is what the developer proposed and with support from CMHC financing and negotiations with the City we got additional affordability out of the units. News coverage from AM800 and CBC respectively! As part of the announcement the Mayor also shared the following:
One of the first conversations I had with the Mayor was about the school owned by the City on Detroit St, and what the plans was. The plan was to get it into the Housing Solutions Made for Windsor portfolio once some of the existing projects have been moved forward. We are now in that position. I have to thank the Mayor and all of my council colleagues for moving this forward!
Pretty much a whole block between Peter St. and Donnely St. facing Detroit street could become various types of housing in West Windsor! Apartment buildings are nearby, family homes, walkable to Sandwich Town and the University and unlike every other development in the area, this one is controlled by the City and we are going to move it forward! I have many thoughts and ideas that I am going to save for now. I get that some people will be cynical about it, that’s fair, but from my perspective a potential development like this hasn’t happened in West Windsor in decades!
More information will be coming soon around things like community consultations, timelines, and more but this was a big win for West Windsor and Ward 2. By 2028 or 2029 we could have dozens – maybe a hundred(s) of new housing units and families living in Sandwich Town! This is the first step but that is the most important one to take!

I think this is great news. There are so many opportunities to build a better Ward 2.
That’s al awesome news but we can’t not address the elephant in the room! Again I repeat, as a resident on Edison St for 20 plus years of continuous B.S. we are no further along addressing the boarded up houses! Not only have we had endure this slum atmosphere for that long but also the fact that not one improvement- sidewalks, street repairs, nothing! Let alone the fact that there are I’m guessing 20 potential housing lots there that could be used! Come on! Let’s not keep pretending that this is not in our control! Always the status quo! Well you know, it’s just the west end!
Gerry, I hear you, I am frustrated about the Bridge and boarded up homes too!
I will say, some parts are out of control. When the bridge doesn’t negotiate in good faith or makes crazy low ball offers, do you want us to just rollover and not take it? We don’t own those lots, the bridge does, you want us to buy them outside of the negotiation? I hope the bridge issues get solved, if they want to stop paying Trump and have a serious negotiation I will be the first to support the Mayor in moving forward, but that isn’t where we are right now.
What is in our control is a project like St Michaels, if this project lands and we get 50 or 100 families in the neighbourhood, it is game changing! It doesn’t tear down the boarded up homes but it changes a whole range of dynamics for West Windsor.
I am for supporting affordable housing and finding homes for families that are in need.
We must be addressing other issues as well. The boarded up homes that sit to rot, our roads that need serious repair, property owners that continue to neglect property maintenance.
Sandwich Street looks amazing but there is more to our neighborhood than just the main street.
I am a happy, responsible home owner of 30yrs and I strongly believe we can bring it back but the city needs to hold home/property owners responsible
